Hello! We have all been dealing with a consistently hot and sun-filled summer, and I know I (and probably you) are ready for a break and to finally see some cooler weather. Unfortunately now is not the time for that quite yet, this week we are going to continue to see above normal temperatures, high humidity and mainly sunny skies.

I am sure you all have heard this term thrown around, but our atmospheric circulation is currently consistent with El Niño. If you aren't familiar with El Niño, it's essentially when we see above average sea surface temperatures (SST) across the east-central and eastern Pacific Ocean. These sea surface temperatures can in turn affect the upper-air winds, and push extra moisture towards us here in the southern United States. This increase in moisture can increase the threat of heavy rain, severe storms and potential flooding as seasons change.

El Niño is strengthening, meaning that there is a large change of a very strong event during fall and winter this year, so this is something we should keep in mind.

As we can see in this figure above, us in Dallas are projected to continue to see above average temperatures up until November, but our precipitation is projected to be in the equal chances for what we usually see this time of the year. We have been stuck in a high pressure system, which is pushing us into high temperatures while keeping us semi-dry (with the exception of the high humidity)

With these high temperatures, we are currently in a heat advisory, heat index values are going to be very high, and the “feels like” temperature could reach up to 108 for the rest of today. If you aren't familiar with the “feels like” temperature in comparison to the actual temperature, the “feels like” temperature is what the air temperature feels like to the human body when taking into account the relative humidity. The human body feels considerably warmer in more humid temperatures, because it is more difficult for the body to cool itself off.

With regards to the rest of the week, expect temperatures to remain high in the 90s. With high temperatures for the afternoon sticking around the high 90s and low 100s. So try your best to stay cool indoors, and hang out in the shade. With this being said, we are seeing an upper level ridge over the south-central United States (TX, OK, KS), which is why we are seeing these high temperatures follow us into September (high pressure = high temperatures, fair weather). We may see a small disturbance moving into this evening which could bring in some moisture to create some isolated showers and gusty winds for areas east of the I-35 corridor. No worries for severe weather, but keep an eye out for some instability popping up.

I hope everyone is having a smooth week so far, and be sure to drink lots of water and stay aware of high heat index values for the rest of the week. 🤘🏼
